| | Prozbul | The Torah states that every seven years, debts are discharged. While there is some debate as to whether this obligation is now still biblically required, rabbinically required, or perhaps not required any longer at all, most halachic authorities rule that Jewish law requires debts to be discharged at the end of the Shemittah (Sabbatical) year. The year 5768 is such a year. In order to avoid the onerous requirements of this law, and more significantly, the possibility that Jews will violate the biblical prohibition of refusing to lend as the seventh year approaches, Hillel the Elder instituted a document called prozbul, which allows a debtor to transfer his debts to a beit din, a Jewish court. Debts owed to a Jewish court were not discharged. Beit Din would then grant the creditor the right to collect the debt. This document must be executed prior to Rosh Hashanah 5769. Like all documents in Jewish Law, a person can not only fill in this document himself in front of a Beit Din, but also can authorize the writing of this document by a Beit Din. As a service to the community, The Jewish Center is glad to arrange for a prozbul to be written for anyone who wishes to do so. A form is available in the sleeves in the lobby, and will be mailed out to the membership as well. Simply fill in the relevant portion of the form if you would like to participate in this arrangement and mail the form back to The Jewish Center.
